I still read the NG now and then. It seems that other websites have
replaced this one. It just occurred to me today..dont ask me why..that
this month its 5 years since Brenda died. As annoying as she was, the
group was really never as lively after her demise. I havent thought
about her in years..and for some reason she popped into my head today.

Nice to still see some familiar names here.

Wow! For some reason it doesn't seem like five years. She definitely brought
a lot of energy to this group even though most of the time it was really
non-EJ related.

I wish people had stayed with this group because of the freedom it offers.
Too many (all?) websites are much too moderated for my tastes and I have no
desire at all to be sent private messages telling me I'm not allowed to say
anything about Elton, etc. I also find it a million times easier to follow
conversations on Usenet (using a newsreader and not Google) than on
websites. But given that so many ISPs have dropped newsgroups and most
people don't realize they can access the groups via other means (even free)
is probably a big reason why so many groups are so dead. Luckily not all of
them are and it would be nice if people would come to this group.

It's nice to know that Brenda is remembered here. Whether you loved or
hated her, or somewhere in between, she enjoyed participating in this
group and was a loyal Elton fan. It has been 5 years today since she
passed away and, as her daughter, I miss her just as much. Of course,
I can't listen to Elton without thinking of her.

Fondest wishes to everyone at alt.fan.elton-john,

Emily, Im glad I posted about your mom. I know you must miss her
constantly. Best wishes to you as well. I know I will always associate
this newsgroup with your mom. Her heart was always in the right place.

Take care.

Brian! I agree. I love the freedom too. And of course with freedom comes
responsibility..which we dont always see but I was always willing to
tolerate the nonsense because the freedom of expression, which we are
losing bit by bit in this country, should be preserved. It would be
great to recapture the old energy but I think Facebook has replace the NGs.

I'm not sure Facebook has replaced NGs but forums seem to be the trend now.
It wouldn't be so bad if they had better interfaces to follow threads
because it seems like you spend more time hunting for stuff than
posting/reading. Facebook has no such ability (search) as far as I know and
the only thing worse would be if everything moved to Twitter. Maybe one day
someone will figure out how to replicate the features of a newsgroup reader
in a forum.

I totally agree with you about your comments concerning freedom of
expression/freedom of speech. It's even worse here in Canada but people are
finally waking up and starting to push back against all of the crazy
political correctness and the kangaroo Human Rights courts where if someone
does something that hurts your feelings you can actually go run to them and
they'll make the person's life you accused a living hell. Very sad.
Fortunately in Alberta where I live they went too far a few years ago when
they went after a publisher who republished those Danish cartoons of
Mohammad. Some Muslim group launched a complaint but the publisher is a well
known lawyer here who decided to fight back. He hired his own lawyer and
demanded to tape the proceedings. He even put this up on YouTube so people
could see what a joke these Human Rights tribunals are. He literally ripped
a new asshole for the bitch who is the head of the Human Rights Commission
but it ended up costing him over $100,000 to win his case. But at least he
exposed these idiots for the unethical pieces of shit that they are. People
need to wake up and realize that losing even a bit of freedom of
expression/speech is never okay because some group will want to take it all
away from you. End of rant!

Brian..sorry it took so long to reply. I forget to check this..I havent
posted on it in so long....Its not in my routine anymore.

You are right about the ease of features of the newsgroup. But you can
carry on a thread pretty well on Facebook...its just that it isnt
limited to Elton fans..anyone can pipe in. Which is OK too. Now we tend
to just email or message each other privately.

That is a great story about the lawyer who fought and beat the human
rights courts. He should have had his investment reimbursed. I am glad
we dont have those here..but I can sure see it coming. What the hell
happened? I mean I dont know much about Canada..but I can tell you that
there is no right to privacy or right to never having your feelings hurt
in our Constitution. But it seems anymore both of those trump the right
of freedom of speech. Go figure.

Good to hear from you..sorry I was so tardy in response.
